Smokies Survive Late Stars Charge to Win
Huntsville Falls Three Games Behind Division Leaders

Mitch Atkins worked seven solid innings and Mark Reed drove in three runs to push Tennessee past Huntsville 6-4 Tuesday night in the second of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Smokies improved to 10-4 in the second half with their first win in seven tries against the Stars, who dipped to 7-7 in the half and 48-36 overall. The Stars had won the first six games by outscoring the Smokies 44-17.

Alcides Escobar began the eighth inning with a single leading the Smokies to remove Atkins from the game and replace him with left-hander Casey Lambert, who gave up a double to Mat Gamel that chased home Escobar to make it 5-4. The southpaw got Angel Salome to ground out, advancing Gamel to third before Matt LaPorta popped out to second against a drawn-in infield for the second out. Lambert was then taken out in favor of right-hander Jose Ceda, who struck out Cole Gillespie to end the frame.

Tennessee added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on an infield single by Reed that plated Doug Deeds. The Smokies catcher came to the plate with runners at first and second and bounced a ground ball through the middle that a diving shortstop Escobar tried to glove and shovel to second base all in one motion. The ball got past second baseman Mike Bell, allowing Matt Matulia to get to third and Reed to advance to second. Omar Aguilar avoided further trouble by retiring Tyler Colvin and Sam Fuld to end the inning. Ceda then set down the Stars in turn in the ninth to record his fourth save.

Stars' starter Brae Wright, a winner in each of his last four turns on the road, blanked the Smokies through two before running into trouble in the third. Matulia and Reed singled to start the inning before Wright fielded Atkins' sacrifice bunt attempt and threw late to third base in an attempt to cut down Matulia. With the bases loaded, Fuld singled in the home team's first run and Nate Spears' scoring fly ball brought home Reed to give the Smokies a 2-1 lead.

Deeds reached with one out in the home fourth on a fielding error by Bell, moved to second base on an infield single by Josh Lansford and to third when Matulia was hit by a pitch. Reed followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 4-1 and a one-out, run-scoring hit by Fuld capped a three-run rally. Wright was lifted after six innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, while striking out five and not issuing a walk for a second straight turn. He fell to 6-7 and suffered his first loss on the road since May 3.

Salome's two-out run-scoring hit pulled the Stars to within 5-2 in the sixth and Bell's two-out home run, his sixth of the season, in the seventh got the visitors to within 5-3.

The series continues Wednesday night with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the hill for Huntsville against Smokies' left-hander Donnie Veal. Narron's Gem Leads Sounds Past Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Left-hander Sam Narron worked a complete game to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

The Sounds (34-51) have won four of their six contests on the current road trip.

Narron's outing was the first nine-inning complete game by a Sounds pitcher in 2008 and resulted in his 11th overall win of the year, a total that ties for the minor league lead. He allowed one run on seven hits and walked two batters while fanning three in his 121-pitch outing that included 76 strikes.

The southpaw was within one strike of a shutout in the bottom of the ninth when Jarrett Hoffpauir ripped an RBI double off the left field wall to plate the lone Memphis run.

In addition to his exploits on the mound, Narron (5-3) helped his own cause with a 3-for-4 night at the plate.

Other highlights of the evening for the Sounds included the seventh triple play in the club's 31-year history and two-RBI efforts from Brendan Katin (3-for-4) and Ozzie Chavez.

For the second straight night, Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hernan Iribarren led off with a walk, stole second, and later scored the contest's first run on Katin's two-out RBI single to center off Redbirds starter Jaime Garcia. The knock extended the outfielder's season-best hitting streak to six games.

The Sounds turned their first triple play in over three years in the bottom of the second inning. After Memphis put the first two runners on against Narron via a Josh Phelps walk and Nick Stavinoha single, D'Angelo Jimenez lined out to first baseman Vinny Rottino with the runners in motion. Rottino stepped on first and threw to shortstop Chris Woodward at second to complete the triple play, which was the seventh in the franchise's 31-year history.

AUDIO: Sounds Turn Three!

Nashville increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with a pair of unearned runs stemming from consecutive throwing errors on Garcia as the hurler failed to handle a pair of sacrifice bunts. Narron singled to open the frame then moved to third as both Iribarren and Tony Gwynn laid down bunts that were mishandled by Garcia as the Sounds loaded the bases. Rottino grounded into a double play that allowed Narron to score before Katin came up with his second two-out run-scoring knock of the evening, a triple to right that plated Iribarren.

The Sounds tacked on a fourth run in the fourth when Mel Stocker led off with a double, advanced to third on a Garcia balk, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chavez.

Stocker and Chavez teamed up again in the eighth against Memphis reliever Matt Scherer to extend the Nashville lead to 5-0. Stocker ripped a one-out double, moved to third on a passed ball, and came plateward on Chavez's second sac fly of the night.

Garcia (4-4) took his third loss in four starts against the Sounds this season after he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in his five innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Wednesday night. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (3-0, 3.91) will make his first start since returning to the Sounds from Milwaukee. Memphis will counter with right-hander Clayton Mortensen (2-1, 3.42).
