Arizona Box Score A-Crew now 1-8 on the young season; during today's Milwaukee pre-game audio, Bob Uecker was discussing the conditions outside (112 degrees, this box score lists 102) and that the summer league game was underway as he spoke -- brutal -- I don't think we can understate these conditions; Opening Day RHP Luis Guerrero with a rough start; RHP's Ben Jeffers and Jose Sanchez acquitted themselves better in two-inning relief stints, Jeffers in particular as he stranded three of Guerrero's baserunners; offensively, it's the same old thing -- the kids struck out 12 times while drawing only one walk, six hits, all singles, spread throughout the lineup; SS Carlos George committed two throwing errors, giving him 11 errors on the season -- if he had committed just one, I wouldn't have mentioned it -- he'll come along... Mass, it was actually quite pleasant today. It's been a bit humid here lately...like 20%. But I'd say 110 with 20% humidity feels comparable to
Wisconsin's summertime 85 degrees with 80% humidity

Merklinger and Bryson combine for 9 innings of 5 hit 1 walk baseball with Merklinger giving giving up 1 earned run and Bryson none. The two combined for 13
strikeouts with Bryson hitting 91 on the stadium gun twice, which is typically 4-5 MPH slow! Not much offense for the Power tonite, but they took out the
second place Suns to extend their 2nd half lead! Power pitching is really starting to come along on all ends!

I'm not sure how I feel about Tyson in Helena, he already was successful there, he's not Mercedes, his K to BB ratio is still excellent, he just gives
up way more hits than he should. At any rate he had a decent line tonight.

Dykstra gets his first pro HR, a no-doubter in the 9th, and Luetge picks up his first career win, as the H-Crew pounds Missoula 15-5 by pulling a game above
.500 after their terrible start. I know the injury situation was a hot topic a few days ago, but Dennis, Dykstra and Komatsu could form the next solid trio of
minor league OFs in the Brewers system if they continue to advance together.

I hope the Brewers trade for CC and I dont mind giving up a LaPorta or a Gamel (I would rather give up LaPorta if I had the choice) because it helps the team try for a playoff run and once the offseason hits we are going to get 2 picks for him and add on if Sheets doesnt resign thats 2 more picks and we are in the same situation we where last year with 7 picks in the top 90. Also with Parra looking very good we have Gallardo, Parra, Suppan, McClung, Bush. I hope Villy can get a grasp on how to effectively pitch a 3rd time through the order because I think he has the stuff to do it. Plus we still have Cappy. Sorry for the rant but like I said exciting times. |

Sounds Drop Road Trip Finale In Memphis, 5-1 Date Posted: 7/3/2008 Link MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds posted a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park in the last of 16 meetings between the division rivals this season. With the loss, Nashville (34-53) settled for a series split with the Redbirds as well as a 4-4 mark on the road trip. Nashville took a 1-0 lead with its only run of the evening in the top of the second inning. Brad Nelson (3-for-4) led off with a single, moved to second on a Clayton Mortensen wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Adam Heether's sacrifice fly to left. Memphis evened the contest in the home half of the frame when Shane Robinson plated Josh Phelps with a two-out RBI single off Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin. Neither team scored again until the seventh when Phelps greeted Sounds reliever Derrick Turnbow with a double to center and later gave Memphis a 2-1 lead when he scored on Bryan Anderson's two-out RBI single to center. The Redbirds added three insurance runs in the eighth against rehabbing Sounds lefty Randy Choate. Phelps continued his strong night with a two-run triple to center, his first three-bagger of the year, before plating the game's final run on a Nick Stavinoha single. Gulin took a no-decision for Nashville but lowered his ERA to 3.02 on the year with a quality start. The All-Star southpaw allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work. Mortensen (4-1) picked up the win for Memphis with a quality start of his own, holding the Sounds to one run on six hits over seven innings. Mark Worrell worked the final two frames in scoreless fashion to notch his third save of the year for the Redbirds. Turnbow (1-2) took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in his lone frame of action for the Sounds. Nashville outfielder Brendan Katin singled in the top of the sixth inning to extend his longest hit streak of the year to eight games, the longest active on the club. The Sounds begin a brief three-game Independence Day weekend homestand on Friday evening with the 7 p.m. series opener against Round Rock (AAA-Astros). Final: Huntsville 4, Tennessee (Cubs) 0 Stars Return Home After Breaking Even on Road By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars LInk Nic Ungs threw seven shutout innings and received home run support from Matt LaPorta and Cole Gillespie in Huntsville's 4-0 win over Tennessee in the last of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Stars split the series and split their 10-game road trip to return home at 8-8 in the second half and three games behind the North Division leading Smokies, who are 11-5. The Stars completed their sixth shutout win of the season. Mat Gamel led off the fourth inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and then came into score when LaPorta ended a 46 at-bat home run drought with his league-leading 20th long ball of the season. LaPorta's last home run had come in the next to last game of the first half at Jacksonville on June 14. LaPorta drew a walk with two out in the sixth and scored when Gillespie followed with a monstrous home run, his 11th of the year, off the top of the scoreboard in left-center field. It was his second long ball on the trip and second since May 28 at Mobile. Alex Maestri was taken out after six innings in his second double-A start, giving up four runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out five. He suffered the loss and fell to 0-1. Ungs did not allow his first hit until Matt Craig's two-out single in the fourth and allowed only pinch-hitter Matt Matulia in the sixth to advance as far as third base. He left after retiring the side in order in the seventh, having thrown 78 pitches and recording 13 ground ball outs. Ungs earned his first win with the Stars and his first since his initial start of the year for triple-A Nashville on April 6. Jason Shiell took over and threw a scoreless eighth inning before yielding singles to Nate Spears and Tyler Colvin to open the ninth. The veteran right-hander struck out Matt Craig before catcher Martin Maldonado, in his first double-A game, picked off Colvin at first base for the second out. Doug Deeds drew a walk but Jake Fox lined out to center field to end the game. The Stars return home Friday night to open a four-game series against Birmingham with left-hander Troy Cate taking the hill for Huntsville against Barons' right-hander Justin Cassel. Naturally, the second game of the double header was rained out... In Jupiter, Taylor Green's two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning gave the Brevard County Manatees a 5-4 win against the Jupiter Hammerheads in Game 1 of Thursday night's doubleheader. Jonathan Lucroy doubled and drove in two runs for the Manatees, who were outhit 9-4. Lorenzo Cain singled and collected his 41st RBI. Winning pitcher Alex Periard (7-6) struck out five and walked none in 6 1/3 innings.
